The Bande noire was a circle of French painters active in the 1890s, primarily associated with the Pont-Aven school in Brittany. The group, which included Émile-René Ménard, Charles Cottet, Lucien Simon, and André Dauchez, was named for their characteristic use of dark, somber tones in their landscapes and genre scenes.
