About
L'Essor was a Belgian avant-garde exhibiting society active in Brussels from 1876 to 1891. Founded to bypass the conservative Salon, it served as a nursery for the Belgian modernist generation: James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, and Georges Minne all exhibited there before moving on to Les XX, which effectively superseded it from 1884. Its overlap with the early Les XX period makes it a direct ancestor of Belgian Symbolism.
