Ilmin Museum of Art

The Ilmin Museum of Art is a private art museum in Seoul, South Korea, located on Sejongno street in the Jongno District, the historic and political heart of the city. Established by the Ilmin Cultural Foundation in 1994 and opened to the public in December 1996, the museum is dedicated primarily to Korean art. It takes its name from the art name "Ilmin" (一民, "one people") of Kim Sang-man (1910-1994), former president of The Dong-A Ilbo, one of South Korea's major newspaper companies, whose personal collection forms the core of the museum's holdings. The institution occupies a distinctive five-story brown stone building, the oldest press building in Korea, and has become notable for preserving its historic appearance amid the modern urban landscape of central Seoul.

The Ilmin Cultural Foundation (일민문화재단), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1994 in memory of Kim Sang-man, who devoted his life to developing Korean journalism and promoting Korean culture. The museum opened as Ilmin Art Hall in December 1996 with three exhibition rooms in The Dong-A Ilbo's previous location, a building constructed in 1926. After a one-year renovation, the museum reopened in February 2002 with expanded facilities. The museum has since developed additional functions beyond exhibition, including the establishment of South Korea's only documentary archive dedicated to documentary films and video art. The museum's collections span traditional and contemporary Korean art with several distinct components. The Ilmin Collection, acquired by Kim Sang-man during his lifetime, contains over 430 art pieces including Korean porcelains, paintings, and calligraphy from the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. A separate body of more than 1,200 paintings and illustrations, entrusted by The Dong-A Ilbo, represents works published in the newspaper and magazines such as Dong-a Ilbo, Shin Dong-a (신동아), and Women Dong-a (여성동아). The contemporary art collection comprises approximately 100 works with social messages, encompassing painting, photography, video art, and installation art. Since the 2002 renovation, the museum has maintained South Korea's only documentary archive of documentary films and video art, located on the fourth floor, holding approximately 200 documentary films and 50 pieces of video art by South Korean and international artists.

The Ilmin Collection serves as the museum's signature holding, with its over 430 pieces of traditional Korean art representing the core of what is displayed on the third floor. The collection of newspaper and magazine illustrations, numbering over 1,200 works, is a distinctive research resource tied to the history of Korean media and visual culture. The contemporary collection's 100 works with social messages demonstrate the museum's engagement with current issues. The documentary archive's holdings of 200 documentary films and 50 video art pieces, accessible by reservation on the fourth floor, constitute a unique national resource for moving-image art in South Korea.

The museum occupies the former Dong-a Ilbo newspaper building at 139 Sejongno (Sejong Avenue), situated at the southern end of Gwanghwamun Plaza in Jung District. The five-story brown stone building, constructed in 1926, is the oldest press building in Korea. Its historic appearance has been preserved, distinguishing it visually from the surrounding tall modern buildings in this central urban area. The 650 square meter facility contains two large exhibition halls and the Ilmin Collection galleries. Special exhibitions are held on the first and second floors, while the third floor displays the Ilmin Collection. The documentary archive occupies the fourth floor. The building's location places it near significant Joseon-period architecture including Gyeongbokgung, Deoksugung, and Gwanghwamun, as well as contemporary governmental and cultural institutions such as Seoul City Hall, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Sejong Center. The Dong-a Media Center, housing Presseum (South Korea's first newspaper museum), stands nearby on the same street.
