Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (Malay: Muzium Kesenian Islam Malaysia) is a museum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, officially opened on 12 December 1998. It is the largest museum of Islamic arts in Southeast Asia. The museum houses a collection of artifacts from across the Islamic world, ranging from the smallest pieces of jewelry to large architectural models. Beyond its role as a repository for objects, the institution aims to foster an appreciation and understanding of Islamic civilization, creating a collection that represents the diversity of the Islamic world across centuries.

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia was officially inaugurated on 12 December 1998. The museum was established with the aim of promoting Islamic art and culture through education, research, and exhibition. Its collection was initially formed through donations and purchases from local and international collectors. Since its opening, the museum has expanded its holdings and its role as a cultural institution, hosting significant anniversary exhibitions such as the 25th anniversary show, A Journey Through Islamic Art, which ran from 13 December 2023 to 30 June 2024. This exhibition highlighted the museum's dedication to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting Islamic art spanning 1400 years, from historical artifacts produced under great Islamic dynasties to contemporary calligraphic art, paintings, and sculpture.

The museum's collection encompasses more than 10,000 artifacts, alongside an exceptional library of Islamic art books. Rather than concentrating exclusively on the traditional heartlands of Persia and the Middle East, the museum places significant emphasis on Asia, with China, Southeast Asia, and India receiving special status. The collection spans vast geographies from Spain to China and covers centuries of artistic production. Holdings range from intimate coins and jewelry to ceramics, textiles, arms, armor, and ancient Islamic glassware. The artifacts are displayed across twelve permanent galleries. Level one contains galleries devoted to architecture, Qurans and manuscripts, and the art of India, China, and the Malay Peninsula. Level two houses galleries for arms and armor, textiles, jewelry, coins, and artworks categorized by material, including metal, wood, and ceramics.

Among the museum's most notable holdings is its Quran and Manuscript Gallery, which features rare handwritten Qurans and illuminated manuscripts. This includes folios from the famed Blue Quran, characterized by gold Kufic letters on indigo-dyed parchment, as well as a folio from the Pink Quran written in the Maghribi style. The gallery also displays calligraphic albums, such as the Alif Ba Mufradat teaching aid, and historical certificates of transmission from master calligraphers to apprentices. Another major highlight is the architecture gallery, which features detailed scale models of important Islamic structures, including one of the world's largest scale models of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. The museum is also home to a faithfully restored early nineteenth-century Ottoman Room, which has contributed to wider research on conserving Islamic vernacular architecture and painted woods in tropical climates. Additionally, the museum holds a significant collection of Malay world artifacts, some entrusted by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM).

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is located at Jalan Lembah Perdana in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's tourist zone. It sits within walking distance of several major landmarks, including the National Mosque (Masjid Negara), the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, the National Planetarium, and the National Museum of Malaysia. The museum is accessible via a short walk west from the Kuala Lumpur railway station. It operates daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. As a cultural and educational hub, the institution offers guided tours, workshops, cultural events, and interactive displays, including virtual reality tours, to provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the Islamic world's artistic legacy.
