Kōriyama City Museum of Art

The Kōriyama City Museum of Art is a municipal art museum located in Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Established in November 1992, the institution serves as a cultural hub for the region. It is significant for its dual focus on Western European painting, particularly British art from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Japanese modern art, while also preserving and promoting the work of artists connected to the local Kōriyama area.

The museum opened its doors to the public in 1992, with its inception recorded specifically in November of that year. Since its establishment, it has functioned as a city-run institution dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape of Kōriyama. Over the decades, it has maintained an active schedule of rotating special exhibitions, hosting multiple curated shows each year alongside its permanent displays.

The museum's holdings are characterized by an eclectic mix of Western and Japanese art. Its core Western collection emphasizes classical British landscapes and portraits, alongside modern abstract works and sculpture. The Japanese collection spans early modern prints and lithographs to modern painting, and also includes decorative tableware and ceramics. A distinct strength of the collection is its dedication to artists associated with Kōriyama, anchoring the broader international and national narratives to the local community.

The permanent collection features works by major British artists, including Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, J. M. W. Turner, Edward Burne-Jones, and John William Waterhouse. The Japanese holdings feature prominent artists such as Shiba Kōkan, Takahashi Yuichi, Fujishima Takeji, and Kishida Ryūsei. Additionally, the museum owns notable sculptures by the British artist Antony Gormley, each constructed from numerous small metal bars welded together into coherent forms.

The museum is attractively situated on a forested slope to the east of the Kōriyama town center. Approaching the entrance, visitors encounter a stylized landscape of cut stone, which features a sculpture of an airborne rabbit balancing on a bell. The building's interior is airy and sleek, employing a modern aesthetic that incorporates extensive wood elements. High ceilings and abundant natural light define the spacious exhibition rooms, providing an ideal environment for viewing larger paintings and sculptural installations. The facility also includes a studio for concerts and film screenings, a small art library, a gift shop, and a cafe.

The museum is located in Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture. For those arriving by public transit, the museum is accessible via a local bus route that runs approximately every hour to and from Kōriyama Station, as the walk from the station takes roughly forty minutes. The museum is open daily from 9:30am to 5:00pm, closing on Mondays, with the exception that when a public holiday falls on a Monday, the museum remains open and closes on the following Tuesday. The museum also closes for the New Year holidays. Admission to the permanent collection is ¥200, with discounts available for groups and students, and free entry for senior citizens and junior high school students or younger. Special exhibition prices vary. The institution is managed by the city of Kōriyama.
