Ken Domon Museum of Photography

The Ken Domon Museum of Photography (土門拳記念館, Domon Ken kinenkan) is a museum in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, dedicated to the life and work of the photographer Ken Domon. Opened in 1983, it holds the distinction of being the first museum in Japan devoted exclusively to photography. Located in Iimoriyama Park, the museum preserves and displays Domon's donated collection while also promoting contemporary photographic arts through awards presented in his name.

The museum's origins trace to 1974, when Ken Domon became the first honorary citizen of his birthplace, Sakata. On this occasion, he donated his entire collection of works to the town. This donation prompted the decision to construct a museum in his honour, and the institution opened in 1983. The building was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, a noted architect, and received the 9th Isoya Yoshida Award in 1984.

The museum's holdings centre on the photographic output of Ken Domon, comprising approximately 70,000 prints. Beyond Domon's own work, the collection extends to works by recipients of two awards established in his name: the Domon Ken Award and the Domon Ken Cultural Award (土門拳文化賞, Domon Ken Bunka-shō), the latter presented by the city of Sakata.

The core of the collection consists of Domon's donated works, numbering roughly 70,000 prints. The museum also holds photographs by winners of the Domon Ken Award and the Domon Ken Cultural Award, reflecting its dual role as both a memorial to Domon's legacy and a promoter of subsequent generations of photographers.
