Kirishima Open-Air Museum

The Kirishima Open-Air Museum (霧島アートの森, Kirishima āto no mori) is Kagoshima Prefecture's premier center for cultural and artistic exchange, located in Yūsui-chō in the Aira district of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 2000 and situated in the foothills of Mount Kirishima at an elevation of 700 meters (2,300 feet) above sea level, the museum spans 20 hectares (49 acres) and is distinguished by its integration of sculpture with the natural landscape of the Kirishima woods. Its significance lies in its role as a regional hub where visitors experience works of high artistic value exhibited seamlessly within a forested mountain setting, combining the appreciation of art with the seasonal transformations of nature.

The museum opened on 12 October 2000, designed by architect Hayakawa Kunihiko. From its inception, the institution was conceived as a place where artists from across Japan and around the world would visit the Kirishima landscape and create original works responding to the region's nature, history, and culture. The establishment of the museum reflected a broader regional initiative to position Kirishima as a destination for cultural engagement, building upon the area's existing identity within Kirishima-Yaku National Park. The museum's development has emphasized site-specific creation, with artists working directly in the landscape rather than simply installing pre-existing works.

The museum's holdings and exhibitions are divided between outdoor and indoor presentation. The Open-Air Gallery constitutes the core experience, displaying original works created by domestic and international artists who visited Kirishima specifically to respond to its environment. These works are integrated into a 13-hectare (approximately 32-acre) outdoor area accessible via a 2-kilometer garden trail. The Art Hall serves as the indoor component, functioning as the gateway to the museum and housing permanent collections alongside special exhibitions. The Art Hall also contains multi-purpose spaces dedicated to artistic education and workshops, supporting the museum's mission of cultural exchange beyond passive viewing.

The outdoor collection comprises approximately 22 works distributed across the grounds, all of which are original pieces created for this specific site. Visitors are encouraged to engage physically with these works, touching or even sitting on the pieces as they move along the trail. The museum emphasizes that these are not transferred works but original creations born from direct encounter with Kirishima's landscape, nature, and cultural context. The collection's character is defined by this site-specificity, with each work conceived to harmonize with and reveal aspects of its forested mountain setting through seasonal change.

The museum occupies a 20-hectare site at 700 meters elevation in the foothills of Mount Kirishima, within the broader Kirishima-Yaku National Park. Architect Hayakawa Kunihiko designed the built components, which include the Art Hall as the primary indoor structure. The site plan deliberately minimizes architectural intervention in favor of preserving the natural topography and vegetation, allowing the landscape itself to serve as the primary exhibition space. The Art Hall contains supporting facilities including a café, museum shop, and mini-library, consolidating visitor services at the entry point while the sculpture trail disperses the experience across the terrain.

The museum is located at 220 Koba 6340, Yūsui, Kagoshima Prefecture. It operates under Kagoshima Prefectural administration. Access from Kagoshima Chuo Station requires taking the JR Limited Express Hayato no Kaze for 80 minutes to Kurino Station, followed by a 20-minute ride on the Yusui Town Furusato Bus to the Kirishima Art Forest stop. From Kagoshima Airport, visitors take an airport bus for 30 minutes to the Ikiiki Countryside Center stop, then transfer to the Yusui Town Furusato Bus for 20 minutes. Operating hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with admission ending at 4:30 p.m.; hours extend during summer months. The museum is closed Mondays, from 29 December to 2 January, and from 25 February to 3 March. Admission is 320 yen for adults, 210 yen for high school through college students, and 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
