Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art

The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art is a public art museum located in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The institution holds a collection of more than 6,000 works and presents rotating exhibitions throughout the year. It occupies a hilltop site that spans the three wards of Kokura Kita, Tobata, and Yahata Higashi, and operates a secondary branch in the Riverwalk Kitakyushu commercial complex.

The museum opened in 1974 as a significant cultural project for the city of Kitakyushu. An extension was added to the main building in 1987 to expand its facilities. In 2003, the institution expanded its operational footprint by opening a branch facility on the banks of the Murasaki River in the city center, which primarily hosts temporary and traveling exhibitions.

The museum's holdings encompass approximately 6,000 artworks, with a particular strength in works on paper. The primary focus is Japanese art of the 19th and 20th centuries. This includes traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock prints as well as modern Japanese works executed in the Western style, known as Yoga. The collection also features Western European art, specifically pieces from the French Impressionist movement and associated periods.

Highlights of the Ukiyo-e collection include prints by Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Suzuki Harunobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. In the Yoga style, the museum holds works by Kishida Ryusei, Koide Narashige, Koga Harue, Imanishi Chutsu, Katata Tokuro, and Toyama Goro, alongside modern pieces by Kinosuke Ebihara and Tadashi Kawamata. Western works include Claude Monet's Water Lily Pond in the Shade of a Willow, Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Woman with a Straw Hat, Edgar Degas's Monsieur and Madame Manet, and Pierre Bonnard's Paris Morning. Sculptures by Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin are also part of the collection.

The main museum building is situated in the Bijutsunomori Park in the Sayagatani area of Tobata. Designed by architect Arata Isozaki and his atelier in collaboration with Environmental Planning, the 1974 modernist concrete structure features two gallery blocks clad in square tiles that project as cross-wings over the core building. The site offers panoramic views over the city, and the surrounding park serves as an outdoor sculpture garden.

The main museum is located in Nishi-Sayagatani-machi, Tobata-ku, and is accessible via its hilltop park setting. The branch facility is located at Riverwalk Kitakyushu along the Murasaki River in the city center, providing a more centrally located venue for rotating exhibitions. The institution operates under the municipal government of Kitakyushu and maintains an official website for public access and exhibition information.
