Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts

The Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (KdMoFA) is a contemporary art museum situated in the Beitou District of Taipei, Taiwan. It holds the distinction of being Taiwan's first professional art museum located on a university campus, operating as an integral part of the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA). The institution serves as a vital platform for contemporary visual arts, combining exhibitions, education, public service, and research-based collections. By bridging academic study with public engagement, it functions as a dynamic space for artistic perception, cultural creativity, and cross-cultural dialogue.

The museum's origins trace back to 1991 when TNUA President Ma Shui-Long initiated the Museum Planning Project. Construction began in 1993, and the building was completed in 1996. Before its official launch, the space hosted co-organized exhibitions in 2001 and 2002, such as Waves Striking: One Hundred Years of Taiwanese Arts, which secured funding from Taiwan's Ministry of Education for interior remodeling. Following renovations in 2004, KdMoFA officially opened on March 12, 2005, with the inaugural exhibition 2005 Kuandu Extravaganza. While some records cite 2007 as the opening year, this aligns with the formal initiation of its international artist residency program. Leadership has included directors Chu Teh-I (2002 to 2018), Lin Hong John (2018 to 2019), Huang Chien-Hung (2019 to 2024), and Su Meng-hung (since August 2024).

KdMoFA focuses on contemporary art practices, balancing works by local Taiwanese artists with international contemporary expressions. Its curatorial direction emphasizes interdisciplinary and experimental forms, exploring themes of memory, identity, and societal challenges, with specific strengths in new media, printmaking, and cross-cultural dialogue. The museum prioritizes inter-Asia and inter-institutional artistic exchange, driving the advancement of Taiwan's contemporary art scene. It fulfills its mission through themed curations, international exchange exhibitions, and the Kuandu Residency and Do Open Call Curatorial Projects, which provide artists and curators with on-site creation and research opportunities to foster exchange between domestic and international creators, university faculty, students, and the public.

The museum is renowned for its biennial exhibitions, beginning with the inaugural I Have a Dream in 2008 and continuing with the multi-year format The Time of the Art Society (2022 to 2024), which addresses postcolonial narratives and post-humanism. Other significant programs include the Kuandu Arts Festival, featuring video art retrospectives such as REWIND: Video Art in Taiwan 1983 to 1999 in 2015. KdMoFA regularly organizes international exhibitions, such as Di-stances, featuring artists like Yabuki Takako, Sato Masaharu, and Oh You Kyeong. It has also hosted notable international solo shows by Yoshitomo Nara in 2021 and Francis Alÿs in 2022, the latter including the film Children's Game #37: Che Ling filmed in Taipei in 2023. Additional exhibitions have included Weak Painting and the Taiwan-Israel Young Artists Interchanging Exhibition.

Constructed alongside a hillside overlooking the Guandu Plain, the museum building was designed by architect Lee Tsu-Yuan, with interiors remodeled by Lin Jou-Ming. While sources describe the structure as either a five-story or six-story building, it encompasses a total floor area of 2,380 square meters. The facility includes nine exhibition galleries and two outdoor plazas, designed to support diverse installations and public programs. Its geographic position on the TNUA campus enhances its role in fostering connections between the campus community and the broader artistic discourse, providing a unique setting that integrates the natural landscape with the academic environment.

The Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts is located at No. 1 Xueyuan Road in the Beitou District of Taipei City. It operates Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., remaining closed on Mondays and national holidays. The museum is accessible by bus from the Guandu Station of the Taipei Metro. As a university-affiliated institution, it leverages the academic resources of TNUA to provide environments for undergraduate teaching, postgraduate theses, and creative inspiration, while simultaneously serving the broader public as a key venue for contemporary art education and social learning.
