Kurume City Art Museum

Kurume City Art Museum is an art museum in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It opened in 2016 as the successor to the Ishibashi Museum of Art. The institution is a significant regional center for Western-style painting, with a specialized focus on the work of local Kurume artists and the broader Kyushu yoga movement.

The museum operates within the Ishibashi Culture Center, which originally opened in 1956. In 1980, the culture center expanded its campus by relocating the studio of yoga painter Sakamoto Hanjiro from Yame. Sixty years after the culture center's debut, the Ishibashi Foundation completed renovations and donated the facility to the city. This 2016 donation and renovation marked the establishment of the Kurume City Art Museum, replacing the former Ishibashi Museum of Art, and coincided with the opening of the Shojiro Ishibashi Memorial Museum on the same campus.

The collection focuses on the work of artists from Kurume and the wider Kyushu region, with a particular emphasis on Kyushu yoga, or Western-style painting. The museum prioritizes local figures, most notably the Kurume-born painters Aoki Shigeru and Sakamoto Hanjiro. The holdings also encompass works by other associated Kyushu artists, including Koga Harue, Nakajima Yajuro, Ebihara Kinosuke, Togo Seiji, Tasaki Hirosuke, Ushijima Noriyuki, and Nomiyama Gyoji.

Signature works in the collection include two prominent oil paintings. The first is Sakamoto Hanjiro's 1924 canvas Hosui-ji no kumo, which translates to Clouds over the Flood Diversion Channel. The second is Kojima Zenzaburo's 1957 oil painting Mimoza sono-ta, meaning Mimosa and Other Things.

The museum is situated within the broader Ishibashi Culture Center site. The campus integrates the museum building with the relocated historical studio of painter Sakamoto Hanjiro, moved from Yame in 1980. It also shares the site with the Shojiro Ishibashi Memorial Museum, a structure dedicated to the founder of the Bridgestone tire company, which was renovated and donated to the city alongside the art museum's establishment in 2016.
