Nara Prefecture Complex of Man'yo Culture

The Nara Prefecture Complex of Man'yo Culture (奈良県立万葉文化館, Nara-kenritsu Man'yō Bunkakan) is a museum and comprehensive cultural institute located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Japan. Opened in September 2001, it is dedicated to the study, preservation, and public presentation of the Man'yōshū, Japan's earliest existing anthology of waka poetry. The institution holds particular significance because Nara Prefecture contains more references in the Man'yōshū than any other region, earning it recognition as the 'home of Man'yō.' The poet and scholar Susumu Nakanishi serves as its honorary director.

The Nara Prefecture Complex of Man'yo Culture was established in September 2001 in Asuka Village as a comprehensive cultural institute for ancient culture with special emphasis on the Man'yōshū. The site selection carried archaeological weight: excavations conducted prior to construction revealed the Asukaike Ruins, an ancient factory site that was subsequently designated as a national Historic Site. The poems cover themes of seasons and nature, love, and travel, and were composed by a remarkably diverse range of voices including emperors, empresses, aristocrats, public workers, conscripted soldiers known as sakimori, and numerous anonymous men and women. The anthology, compiled with involvement from figures such as Ōtomo no Yakamochi and completed around the late eighth century, serves as a crucial documentary source for the lives and customs of its era. The museum's holdings and displays extend beyond textual materials to include artworks inspired by Man'yō poems, with particular strength in Japanese-style paintings (Nihonga) depicting waka from the anthology.

The museum's signature experiential offering is a georama illustrating the Man'yō period of 1,300 years ago, incorporating images and music to immerse visitors in the historical environment. The permanent exhibition program has featured rotating displays of Japanese-style paintings depicting waka poems from the Man'yōshū, with past series organized seasonally. The institution also maintains the Man'yō Garden, which collects trees and flowers that inspired Man'yō poets and incorporates rebuilt ruins and monuments inscribed with Man'yō poems. The Asukaike Ruins, the ancient factory site discovered during pre-construction excavations, constitute a significant archaeological holding that is preserved and displayed on site.

The museum is located at 10 Asuka, Asuka-mura, Takaichi-gun, Nara 634-0103, Japan. It is accessible by bus from multiple rail stations: from the east exit of Kintetsu Kashihara Jingu-mae Station or Kintetsu Asuka Station, visitors take the Asuka Shuyu Bus (Kame Bus) for approximately twenty minutes and alight at Man'yō Bunkakan Nishiguchi, from which the museum is a short walk. Alternatively, buses from JR or Kintetsu Sakurai Station bound for Ishibutai stop at Man'yō Bunkakan. The journey from the nearest stations takes approximately ten minutes by taxi or forty minutes on foot.

Admission to the general museum is free, though fees apply for exhibitions in the Nihonga Exhibition Hall. Hours are 10:00 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00. The museum is closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a national holiday), during the New Year holidays, and during periods of display change.
