Overview
The New Taipei City Art Museum, also known as the New Taipei Museum of Arts (NTMOA; Chinese: 新北市美術館), is a public art museum in Yingge District, New Taipei, Taiwan. Opened in October 2023, it is the first public art museum serving New Taipei City's vast territory, positioned as a major cultural initiative to promote local culture and urban renewal. The institution combines modern and contemporary art programming with environmental consciousness, situated at the confluence of the Yingge River and Dahan River on the Sanying Reclaimed Land.
Founding & history
The museum's development began with a groundbreaking ceremony on 4 December 2018, attended by New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu. Construction proceeded over the following five years, and the museum opened in October 2023 as the main hall of the 2023 Taiwan Design Expo. This timing marked its formal inauguration as a cultural institution. The project represented a significant step in the New Taipei City Government's broader initiative to advance local culture, urban renewal, and regional connectivity between cultural venues and art communities throughout the city.
Collection scope
NTCAM's collection and research program operates under the ethos of 'rooted locally, oriented globally.' The museum focuses on modern and contemporary art and visual culture from the 20th century onward. Its mandate includes studying prominent artists, formulating collection and curatorial strategies, uncovering important artistic practices, and organizing diverse art themes. The institution actively collaborates with scholars and specialists on research initiatives that examine exhibition history, artist biographies, environmental art, and folk art. Through these efforts, it aims to highlight New Taipei's unique artistic evolution, enrich Taiwan's art history, and foster international connections. The museum collects not only artworks but also significant archival materials and art-related documents.
Building & site
The museum was designed by architect Kris Yao. The building features an expected total floor area of 3.2 hectares, with 8 floors above ground and 3 floors below ground. Its facilities include exhibition rooms, an auditorium, children's art space, and warehouse space. The architecture breaks from closed institutional design, integrating the riverside landscape through transparent and open space. The structure is described as a silver-white tubular form with staggered heights that simulates the dynamic feeling of reeds swaying in the wind. The museum park encompasses the main building, the Xinmei rendezvous, the Xinmei gathering place, the outdoor park, and the heart of Sanying. The outdoor park contains public artworks that combine Yingge ceramic culture, including a 15-meter-high orange-red standing greenware piece representing pottery-throwing, with a spiral staircase allowing visitors to overlook Yingge and Sanxia. The museum incorporates eco-friendly architectural designs and aims to develop an arts and culture eco-park, establishing itself as an example of a green museum. The site is externally connected to the Dahan Creek bike lane.
