NTT InterCommunication Center

The NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC) is a media art gallery located in the Tokyo Opera City Tower in Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. Established by the telecommunications company NTT and opened on April 19, 1997, the ICC was founded to commemorate the centenary of telephone service in Japan. The institution functions as a platform for contemporary media art, with a mission to foster dialogue between artistic and scientific communities through exhibitions, live events, and publishing.

NTT established the ICC in 1997 as a cultural initiative marking one hundred years of telephone service in Japan. From its inception, the center was conceived not merely as a museum but as an active laboratory for communication, programming exhibitions alongside workshops, performances, and symposia. Early programming demonstrated this interdisciplinary ambition: in June 1997, the ICC hosted a residency by Sensorband, the trio of Atau Tanaka, Edwin van der Heide, and Zbigniew Karkowski, alongside the Austrian video artists Granular Synthesis (Kurt Hentschläger and Ulf Langheinrich). In January 1999, the center presented a concert series featuring artists from the Austrian label Mego, including Fennesz, O'Rourke and Rehberg, Pita, General Magic, Farmers Manual, Merzbow, Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide, Russel Haswell, and Zbigniew Karkowski. These early events established the ICC's reputation as a significant venue for experimental electronic music and media art in Japan.
