Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum

The Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum, commonly known as Okimu, is the premier cultural institution in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan's southernmost prefecture. Located in the Omoro-machi area of Naha, the prefectural capital, the museum complex opened in November 2007 as an integrated facility combining art, history, and natural history museums dedicated specifically to Okinawan topics. The institution holds particular significance as the first prefectural art museum in Okinawa, marking a major development in the region's cultural infrastructure following its return to Japanese sovereignty.

The museum's origins trace to 1946, when the Ryukyu Governmental Museum was established in the aftermath of World War II. In May 1972, following the end of the United States occupation and Okinawa's reversion to Japan, this institution was reorganized and renamed the Okinawa Prefectural Museum. It was then based in the Onaka-cho neighborhood of Shuri, near Shuri Castle, where it focused on Okinawan history, natural history, folk life, and related subjects. The museum operated at this location until 2007, when it closed and relocated to its current purpose-built site in Omoro-machi. The new complex, designed by Ishimoto Architects, opened in November 2007 with significantly expanded facilities, most notably incorporating Okinawa's first prefectural art museum alongside the relocated history and natural history collections.

The museum's holdings are divided between two main divisions: the Natural and Cultural History Museum and the Art Museum. The natural and cultural history collections encompass the geology, flora, and fauna of the Ryukyu Islands, as well as the full span of Okinawan history and culture. The art collection comprises more than 3,700 works including paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and installations. The art holdings emphasize early modern and contemporary works by Okinawan artists and those with significant connection to the region, supplemented by works by Japanese, other Asian, and American artists. Many works reflect Okinawa's cultural hybridity, shaped by Chinese, Japanese, and American influences. The collection also encompasses traditional art forms such as Bingata, a distinctive Okinawan resist-dyeing technique, alongside contemporary interpretations of these craft traditions. The permanent art displays are rotated three to four times annually.

Among the most significant objects in the natural history collections is Minatogawa Man, the oldest Homo sapiens specimen found in East Asia. The history section features numerous artifacts, art objects, and reproductions illustrating topics from early Jomon period culture through the return to Japanese sovereignty following the US occupation. The art collection includes works by a diverse range of artists, among them Adaniya Masayoshi, Arakaki Yasuo, Ashimine Kanemasa, Foujita Tsuguharu, Ishigaki Katsuko, Kitagawa Tamiji, Miyagi Akira, and Yoshida Hiroshi. The collection's particular strength lies in its documentation of Okinawan artistic identity and the region's complex cultural negotiations.

The museum building was designed by Ishimoto Architects with explicit reference to Okinawa's gusuku, the distinctive castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Constructed largely of local Okinawan limestone, the structure encompasses approximately 24,000 square meters of floor space distributed across four above-ground levels and one basement level. The art museum and history/natural history museum are positioned on opposite sides of a common lobby, allowing visitors to purchase separate or combination admission tickets. The exterior grounds feature reproductions of two traditional Okinawan buildings, a thatch-roofed storehouse and a traditional tile-roofed home, together with shisa statues and objects representing Okinawa's pottery and ceramics tradition. Behind the museum, a sculpture garden containing large contemporary artworks opens onto Shintoshin Park, a major public green space.

The museum is located in Naha, the capital city of Okinawa Prefecture, in the Omoro-machi district. Visitors enter the Natural History section via a glass-floored walkway designed to evoke walking over coral toward an island. The history section centers on a large map of the Ryukyu archipelago projected onto the floor, connected to computer terminals for interactive exploration. Beyond exhibition halls, facilities include a cafe, museum shop, auditorium, extensive library, and a Hands-On Experience Room where visitors can engage with traditional Okinawan clothing, musical instruments such as the sanshin, and various puzzles and games.
