Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery

The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery is a museum dedicated to the history of the Selangor Sultanate and the life of its former ruler, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. Located in the royal town of Klang in the Klang District of Selangor, Malaysia, the institution preserves and presents the royal heritage of the state. It is currently chaired by Tengku Indera Pahlawan Diraja Selangor, Tengku Dato' Setia Putra Alhaj bin Tengku Azman Shah Alhaj, who is the nephew of the late Sultan. The gallery serves as both a memorial and an educational center, documenting the lineage, cultural traditions, and personal history of the Selangor royalty.

The gallery originated from the vision of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who established the institution in 1988 as the Memorial Museum at Jalan Kota Raja in Kampung Jawa, Klang. After Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ascended to the throne in 2001, he sought to create a grander tribute to his late father, who had ruled Selangor for thirty-nine years and served as the Eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia for two years. He commanded that the historic Sultan Suleiman Building be repurposed for this cause. The transformed Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery was officiated by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on 19 October 2007, and opened to the public two weeks later.

The gallery chronicles the history of the Selangor Sultanate from its origins in 1766, tracing the Bugis Sulawesi royal lineage of Opu Tanreburung Daeng Relaka. It houses over 2,000 artifacts that document the heritage of the Sultanate and the personal life of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. The collection encompasses royal regalia, ceremonial objects, historical photographs, and family records. It also features an extensive array of the late Sultan's personal belongings and memorabilia, ranging from everyday items like silver tea services and a tea spoon collection to cameras, coins, medals, krises, uniforms, samurai helmets, and diplomatic gifts from foreign dignitaries and royals.

Among the most significant items on display are meticulously crafted replicas of the Selangor crown jewels, which showcase the artistry and traditions of Malay royalty. The gallery also holds historically important artifacts such as the royal seal of Sultan Abdul Samad, the fourth Sultan of Selangor, and a state sword decorated with silver and Burmese rubies used by the fifth Sultan of Selangor. Additionally, the museum preserves exhibits detailing the late Sultan's childhood, his education, his period as crown prince, and his career in the military and public offices before his appointments as the eighth Sultan of Selangor in 1960 and the Eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2001.

The gallery is housed in the Sultan Suleiman Building, a classic two-story colonial structure completed in 1909. Originally known as The White House, it was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, an architect with the Public Works Department of the Federated Malay States who also designed notable landmarks like the Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh railway stations. The building served various administrative functions throughout its history, including use as a British land and administration office, a Japanese military headquarters during World War II, and a Klang District Office after Malayan independence. A concrete safe from the colonial era remains on the ground floor. The building has since been meticulously restored and recognized as a National Heritage Building, with modern museum facilities integrated into its historic architecture.

The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery is located at Bangunan Sultan Suleiman in Klang, Selangor. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays. Admission to the gallery is free of charge. The site is accessible by public transport, situated within a short walking distance south of the Klang Komuter station, which is served by the KTM Komuter train bound for Port Klang. For visitors driving to the location, Klang is connected to Kuala Lumpur and the rest of Selangor via several major highways, including the Federal Highway, NKVE, SKVE, and KESAS. The gallery is also situated near the Klang Heritage Walk and Little India.
