Taitung Art Museum

The Taitung Art Museum (traditional Chinese: 台東美術館; simplified Chinese: 台东美术馆; pinyin: Táidōng Měishùguǎn) is an art museum located in Taitung City, Taitung County, on the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Established in 2007, it is the first museum at the county level in Taitung and the only exhibition space in eastern Taiwan dedicated specifically to fine arts. The museum occupies 3.96 hectares within Children's Park No. 15 and serves as a cultural anchor for a region celebrated for integrating indigenous heritage, natural landscape, and contemporary artistic practice.

The Taitung Art Museum opened in two stages. The first stage, primarily for exhibitions and collections, was inaugurated on 15 December 2007. The second stage, designed as a multifunctional activity space, followed on 7 November 2009. The museum's establishment reflected broader governmental efforts to transform Taitung County into a destination for tourism and culture. The Taitung County Cultural Center had been restructured into the Taitung County Government Bureau of Cultural Affairs in January 2000, then elevated to the Taitung County Cultural Affairs and Tourism Department in January 2008, and finally the Taitung County Cultural Affairs Department in January 2011. These organizational upgrades aimed to integrate more resources for cultural promotion, with the museum serving as a flagship institution for bringing art into daily life.

The museum's holdings and programming center on fine arts with particular attention to local and regional identity. Scholarly work commissioned by the Taitung County Government has examined the museum's collection through three analytical axes: "Back Mountain," "South Island," and "Offsite." A resulting publication, "The Other Story," analyzed 40 Taitung artworks including 30 pieces from the museum's own collection, alongside interviews with local artists and curators. This research framework positions the collection as an alternative narrative to mainstream Taiwanese art history, emphasizing intersections between people and nature and what the project describes as the "purity of life" in Taitung art. The museum also maintains outdoor installations and sculpture on its grounds, contributing to a collection environment that blends curated works with landscape.

The museum has hosted special exhibitions such as "The Circus of Living Creatures: Rats, Termites, Rabbits, Foxes, Mice, Deer, and Flies," a solo exhibition by Zhang Xu. The outdoor lawns feature installation artworks by various artists, including acrobatic totems representing Taitung's indigenous peoples and driftwood art pieces. These outdoor works are accessible year-round and constitute a significant part of the museum's visual identity.

The museum complex spans 3.96 hectares in Children's Park No. 15, bordered by Siwei Road to the north and east and by Zhejiang Road and Kaifeng Road to the south. It comprises two main buildings. The Phase I building contains two exhibition halls named Mountain Song Hall (Shange) and Ocean Dance Hall (Haiwu), along with an exhibition garden, sculpture courtyard, administrative area, conference room, and collection storage. The Phase II building functions as a multifunctional space with a cultural and creative classroom, art-themed restaurant, creative industry shop, residency artist workshop, and lounge area. The expansive green lawns surrounding the buildings display public art and installation pieces, creating an integrated indoor-outdoor cultural environment that the museum describes as embodying the county government's vision of merging Taitung's mountain and ocean landscapes with life and art.

The museum is located in Taitung City and accessible by bus from Taitung Station of the Taiwan Railway. It is open Tuesday through Sunday with hours typically running 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though visitors should verify current schedules as hours may vary. The outdoor green space remains open year-round. Admission is affordably priced: general admission is NT$50, with reduced rates of NT$20 for children under 12, seniors over 65, students, and Taitung residents with identification; groups of 10 or more pay NT$30 per person. Free admission applies to children under 2, seniors over 65, and individuals with disabilities. The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays. As the only dedicated fine arts exhibition space in eastern Taiwan, the Taitung Art Museum functions as both a cultural institution and a leisure destination for locals and tourists.
