Takanabe Museum of Art

The Takanabe Museum of Art (高鍋町美術館, Takanabe-chō Bijutsukan) is a municipal art museum in Takanabe, Koyu County, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 1999, it houses approximately eight hundred artworks and is distinguished by its location within the moat of historic Takanabe Castle. The museum serves as a regional cultural center, combining permanent collections with temporary exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and performing arts.

The museum opened in 1999 as a town-operated cultural institution. It was established to serve not merely as a repository of art but as an active venue for community cultural expression. From its inception, the institution was designed to accommodate diverse activities beyond traditional fine-arts display, reflecting a broader civic mission for cultural engagement in this Kyushu locality.

The collection comprises some eight hundred artworks. Paintings by Kojima Torajirō form a significant component. The museum also holds works by Ikeda Yoson, Tomioka Tessai, and Toshusai Sharaku, indicating a scope that encompasses both modern Japanese painting and earlier artistic traditions. Access is via JR Takanabe Station on the Nippo Main Line, followed by a Miyazaki Kotsu Bus to the Minosaki or Maizuru Park stop, from which it is a short walk. Alternatively, it is approximately ten minutes by taxi from the station. Opening hours are 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The museum is closed every Monday (or the following day if Monday is a holiday), the day after national holidays (except when those fall on weekends), and from December 28 to January 4. Admission is 210 yen for adults, 100 yen for high school students and under, seniors 70 and over, and persons with disability certificates; infants enter free.
