Taman Budaya Yogyakarta

Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, popularly abbreviated as TBY, is a cultural development center in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Established in 1977, it serves as the primary venue for fine art exhibitions, performing arts, and cultural programming in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The institution functions as a Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) under the provincial Culture and Tourism Service, with a mission to develop, preserve, and disseminate Javanese and Indonesian culture through exhibitions, performances, documentation, and educational programs.

TBY traces its origins to 11 March 1977, when it was first built in the Bulaksumur area near Gadjah Mada University under the name Purna Budaya. Vice President Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX inaugurated the complex, which originally comprised two buildings: Pundi Wurya, equipped with a performance stage, dance studio, library, discussion room, and administrative offices; and Langembara, which housed exhibition space, workshops, a canteen, and guest houses. In 1978, the Ministry of Education and Culture established similar cultural centers across Indonesia under the Taman Budaya name. The 1999 regional autonomy laws and 2000 government regulations transferred management of Taman Budaya centers from the central government to provincial administrations. In 2002, TBY was rebuilt at its present location near Benteng Vredeburg, and under Regional Regulation No. 7 of 2002 and Governor's Decree No. 161/2002 dated 4 November 2002, it became a UPTD of the DIY Provincial Culture and Tourism Service.

TBY's holdings and activities span multiple cultural domains. Its documentation and collection efforts focus on cultural potential data, script manuscripts for stories and plays, recorded profiles of artists and cultural figures, recordings of cultural events, and collections of fine art works including painting, graphics, sculpture, craft art, and handicrafts. The institution positions itself as a cultural laboratory, with sharpened missions in fine art through the Biennale Jogja, recorded media through year-round film screenings, performing arts through theater, ketoprak, puppetry, and dance festivals, educational programs providing art guidance and training for children and youth, and publishing activities producing artist profiles, literary anthologies, and art criticism.

The institution does not maintain a permanent museum collection in the traditional sense. Rather, its significance lies in its programming. Regular activities include the Yogyakarta Arts Festival (FKY), held annually between July and August, featuring performing arts, fine art, and art workshops; the Biennale Jogja, held every two years; and the International Gamelan Festival. These events constitute the core of TBY's cultural output and draw national and international participation.

The TBY complex at its current location consists of two principal buildings: the Taman Budaya Concert Hall and the Societet Militair Building. The Concert Hall serves as the official venue for fine art exhibitions, including painting, visual art, sculpture, and craft. The Societet Militair Building functions as a performance space for theater, dance, music, and other performing arts, with a 500-seat auditorium, performance stage, lighting equipment, and outdoor publication facilities.
