Overview

The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts (東京藝術大学大学美術館, Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku Daigaku Bijutsukan) is one of Japan's largest university art museums, holding approximately 30,000 works across two principal sites: the main building in Ueno Park, Taitō, Tokyo, and the Toride Annex in Omonma, Toride, Ibaraki. Established to support the educational and research missions of Tokyo University of the Arts, the museum opened its Toride facility in 1994 and its Ueno Pavilion in 1999. Its holdings include 23 works designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties, with particular strengths in Japanese modern and contemporary art. The museum serves as a vital resource for understanding the development of Japanese art education and the trajectories of artists who trained at the institution.

Founding & history

The museum's origins trace to the Tokyo Fine Arts School, which began collecting art materials for education and research prior to its formal establishment in 1887. These materials were initially housed in a library called Bunko, then transferred to the University Library after the 1949 unification of the Tokyo Fine Arts School and Tokyo Music School. In 1970, music materials from the Faculty of Music were incorporated, and the art section separated from the library to form the Art Museum as an inter-university research institute serving both the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Music. The current University Art Museum was established in 1999 to address the aging of earlier facilities and to provide storage and exhibition spaces commensurate with the collection's scale. The earlier Toride Annex had opened in 1994 in Omonma, Toride, Ibaraki.

Collection scope

The collection numbers approximately 30,000 works, distinguished by its focus on Japanese modern art and its direct connection to the university's educational mission. Beyond finished artworks, it encompasses artist materials, reference materials for art history and music, and documents related to art education. A defining category is the Student Works collection, initiated at the Tokyo Fine Arts School's foundation, which includes both curriculum works and exceptional pieces purchased from graduation and postgraduate submissions. The renowned self-portraits of the oil painting course constitute a significant portion of this category. These student works hold exceptional value for Japanese modern and contemporary art history, as many of these young artists later became masters of the field. The collection also includes 23 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

Notable holdings

Among the 23 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, the museum holds a Nara period scroll of the Illustrated Sutra of Cause and Effect. The painting collection features significant works by major figures in Japanese art history, including Asai Chū, Harada Naojirō, Hashimoto Gahō, Kanō Hōgai, Ogata Kōrin, Takahashi Yuichi, and Uemura Shōen. The self-portraits from the oil painting course represent another category of singular importance, documenting the early development of artists who shaped Japanese modern art. The collection's emphasis on works by former teachers and students of the university creates a unique genealogical record of artistic training and influence in Japan.

Building & site

The museum operates across multiple facilities. The Ueno Pavilion, opened in 1999, is located within Ueno Park in Taitō, Tokyo, on the campus of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. The main building contains a cafeteria, souvenir shop, and store selling painting supplies. Additional exhibition spaces include the Chinretsukan Gallery and the Masaki Memorial Gallery, which are open to the public during exhibitions. The Toride Annex in Omonma, Toride, Ibaraki, opened in 1994 as the museum's first dedicated facility. These spaces accommodate the museum's diverse programming, including collection exhibitions, special exhibitions, graduation exhibitions, and faculty retirement exhibitions.

The Ueno Pavilion is located at 12-8 Ueno Park, Taitō-ku, Tokyo 110-8714. It is approximately a 10-minute walk from the Ueno Park Exit of JR Ueno Station or from Exit 1 of Nezu Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, and about 15 minutes on foot from Keisei Ueno Station on the Keisei Main Line. A Taitō-ku Circulation Bus also serves the area. The museum's hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m.; however, opening hours vary by exhibition.
