Toyota Municipal Museum of Art

The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is an art museum located in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 1995, the museum was established as a municipal cultural institution entirely funded by the city of Toyota. It has become a significant venue for modern and contemporary art in central Japan, distinguished by its architectural pedigree and its deliberate focus on art after modernism from both Japan and abroad.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the museum underwent renovation in 2015, again supervised by the original architect Yoshio Taniguchi, ensuring continuity between the initial design intent and the updated facilities.

The museum's stated aim is to create a collection that provides an overview of art after modernism, encompassing both Japanese and international artists. Its holdings span European and Japanese modern art, with particular strength in early twentieth-century European painting and sculpture. The surrounding landscape was designed by Peter Walker, the American landscape architect. At the entrance stand two significant sculptural works: a simple cubic sculpture by Sol LeWitt and a sculpture of rusted, curved steel plates by Richard Serra.
