Yanase Takashi Memorial Hall

The Yanase Takashi Memorial Hall, also known as the Anpanman Museum, is a museum located in Kami, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to the life and works of Takashi Yanase, a Japanese writer, poet, illustrator, and lyricist who lived from February 6, 1919, to October 13, 2013, the institution celebrates the creator of the famous Anpanman series. Established on July 21, 1996, the memorial hall preserves and showcases the artistic and literary legacy of Yanase, particularly his iconic contributions to Japanese manga and children's literature.

The memorial hall opened its doors to the public on July 21, 1996. It was established to honor Takashi Yanase, a Kochi Prefecture native, and to serve as a permanent home for his extensive creative output. The institution was founded to commemorate his multidisciplinary career as a manga artist, writer, poet, and lyricist, ensuring that his artistic philosophy and beloved characters would be preserved for future generations.

The collection encompasses the broad scope of Takashi Yanase's creative endeavors, with a particular strength in his manga and illustration work. Holdings include original drawings, cover illustrations, and immersive installations that bring his fictional universes to life. The grounds also feature a memorial park populated with numerous statues of Anpanman characters, allowing visitors to engage with the art in an outdoor setting.

Located in Kami, Kochi Prefecture, the museum is approximately one hour by car from the center of Kochi. Public transit access is available via a dedicated Anpanman-themed shuttle bus that connects the museum to Yosa-Yamada Station on the Dosan Line. The museum is open every day except Tuesday, or the following day if Tuesday falls on a public holiday. Advance ticket reservations are required. Admission is tiered, with adult tickets at 1,200 yen, teenagers from 13 to 17 at 800 yen, and children from 4 to 12 at 600 yen, while children under 4 enter free of charge.
