James Van Dyck was an American portrait painter active in New York from about 1825 into the 1840s. He is best known for his 1834 portrait of Aaron Burr, painted from life when the former vice president was in his late seventies. Burr endorsed the likeness, and it became the standard image of him in old age, widely reproduced by lithographers and engravers.
Van Dyck worked in oil and in watercolor on ivory, and examples of his portraiture are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
