Lan Ying

Lan Ying grew up in the southeastern city of Hangzhou, where misty mountains roll into the sea. He spent his life painting the places he knew, the water towns near home and the grand landscapes of the north. Unlike artists who stuck to one style, he kept changing his brushwork, trying to capture how light shifts over water or how mist hides distant peaks.

Look for his skies. They’re never just blue blobs. Lan Ying layered thin, foggy washes of ink to show depth, like when you see haze rise off a lake at dawn.

He painted pine trees with stiff, jagged strokes that look almost like calligraphy. Sometimes his figures are just tiny dots on a path, tiny enough to feel the vastness around them.

He lived through the fall of the Ming dynasty, and some say his later work turned quieter, more restrained. Whether that’s true or not, his paintings always feel like quiet walks through a half-remembered place.
