Wen Zhengming

Wen Zhengming spent most of his life in Suzhou, a city of canals and scholars where art and poetry were daily habits, not hobbies. The third son in a family of officials, he flunked the imperial exams three times and ended up teaching painting instead. He liked quiet mornings: ink, brush, and a pot of tea on a wooden table near a window that let in steady north light.

What sticks about Wen is his stubborn perfectionism. He would paint a single bamboo stalk for days, erasing and redoing until the leaves looked like they had just caught the wind. His handwriting is part of the picture, too, every scroll carries his neat, square calligraphy in the top corner, a kind of signature.

Look for his “blue-and-green” landscapes: sharp peaks in mineral blues and greens, layered like stacked silk screens, with tiny human figures dwarfed by nature. Or spot his hand in a handscroll, if the ink feels lighter than air and the composition balances on a single off-center branch, it’s probably his. Wen taught that a painting should feel effortless, but every erased stroke proves it wasn’t.
