Portrait of Zhiweng

Zhiweng is a Song dynasty landscape artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This painter worked in the Southern Song dynasty, making ink-on-paper scrolls. One scroll here shows the meeting between two monks, Yao-shan and Li Ao, painted before 1256. Lines are spare and brushstrokes few, keeping the focus on the two figures under a cliff.

The scroll feels quiet and thoughtful, as if you’re looking over their shoulders at a private conversation. Tap “Meeting between Yaoshan and Li Ao” to see it up close.
