Unchō 雲潮

Unchō was a Japanese ukiyo-e painter of the Edo period whose identity remains unknown. His art name is thought to derive from that of the ukiyo-e master Katsukawa Shunchō, suggesting a connection to that circle of late eighteenth-century printmakers and painters. He is known chiefly through a surviving painting, Courtesan and Her Attendants under a Willow Tree, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which depicts a high-ranking courtesan with her attendants beneath a weeping willow in spring, a characteristic floating-world subject. No documented biographical details about him survive.
