About this work

This painting shows a tall stone tower with a clock or bell at the top, attached to a long building with small windows. In front, a grassy slope leads down to a waterfront where people stand near a flagpole flying a red-and-white striped flag. Three big sailing ships float in the distance, and the sky is bright with fluffy white clouds. The artist focused on the contrast between the dark tower and the bright sky, making the scene feel dramatic. The people near the flag look small compared to the huge ships and castle. If you like this kind of dramatic lighting, look up chiaroscuro.
