Virgin and Child, with Saints Mary Magdalene, James Major, Stephen, and a Bishop Saint

Allegretto Nuzi, an Italian painter of the mid‑fourteenth century associated with the Gothic tradition of Fabriano, completed a small panel in 1346 that brings together the Virgin Mary, the infant Christ, and four saints. The work is executed on a gold‑ground and is now part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection.

The panel follows the Italo‑Byzantine aesthetic, employing a flat gold background that eliminates spatial depth in favor of symbolic luminosity. Figures are outlined in delicate lines, their drapery stylized into angular folds, and the composition is framed by pointed arches that echo contemporary architectural motifs.

Nuzi’s panel reflects the devotional practices of mid‑fourteenth‑century Italy, where small, portable images of the Virgin and saints were used for private prayer. The inclusion of both apostolic and penitential saints illustrates the era’s emphasis on a broad intercessory network surrounding the central figure of Mary.
