About this work

This sketch shows a lone figure standing in a dimly lit space. The person is wrapped in a heavy coat, holding a bundle under one arm. Their face is hidden, and the background is dark with faint outlines of trees or buildings. The artist used only pencil strokes to create deep shadows and simple shapes. This makes the figure look almost ghostly against the dark background. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works in other art.
