Saint Christopher Giving His Hand to the Infant Jesus is a 1654 ink by Francesco Amato, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a giant man bending over a small child. The man’s muscles are drawn in thick, swirling lines, and he wears a crown of leaves. The child reaches up toward him, holding a staff topped with a cross. Behind them, a tree and some bushes fill the background, sketched in quick, sketchy strokes. The artist used shading to make the figures look three-dimensional, even though it’s just black lines on paper. This was a common trick in etchings to create depth. Next, look up etching to see how artists like this one made prints from metal plates.
Francesco Amato (1590–1650) was an Italian artist, born in Naples.
