Reverberations of Taiga (Volume 2) is a 1704 by Aoki Shukuya, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This ink sketch shows rocks, pines, and misty peaks in soft gray washes. Aoki Shukuya studied under Ikeno Taiga, and you can see Taiga’s bold, simple shapes in these quick strokes. The work feels both rough and delicate at once. Shukuya copied his master’s compositions to practice brush control. These study sheets weren’t meant to be finished pictures. They were training tools, not gallery pieces. Compare the spare energy here to Taiga’s own work at The Cleveland Museum of Art.
