About this work

A lone rowboat sits half-sunk in shallow water, its paint peeling and oars missing. The scene feels quiet, like early morning after a storm. Dow made this print by carving a woodblock, then inking it in layers of soft color. Each print came out slightly different—almost like a painting. He borrowed this idea from Japanese prints, where shapes are flat and edges are sharp. If you like this calm, simple style, look up sfumato. It’s a way to blend colors so softly you barely see the brushstrokes.
