St. Julien le Pauvre: Le Portail is a 1894 by Auguste Lepère, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a crumbling old building with a half-collapsed wall. In the foreground, two women in long dresses pick through rubble—one holds a basket, the other bends over a barrel. A man in a hat stands near the doorway, which has a clock above it. The street is messy, with broken bricks and scattered debris everywhere. The building looks like a church, but it’s falling apart. The artist focused on everyday life in a run-down neighborhood, not fancy scenes. If you like this gritty, honest style, check out Realism.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
