Summer Evening is a 1910 by Auguste Lepère, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a quiet pond at dusk. A big tree stands on the left, its branches dark against a pale sky. On the right bank, four people sit or stand near the water—some splash their feet, one leans on a stick. The moon glows faintly above the trees. The artist used bold black lines and soft shading to separate light and dark. The people look relaxed, almost like they’re part of the scene, not posed. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how this lighting trick works.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
