About this work

This black-and-white portrait shows a serious-looking man with a wide mustache and a ruff collar. He’s wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a belt with a small pouch. His hands rest on his chest, and the background is plain, keeping all the focus on him. The text at the top reads *"Marcet sine adversario virtus"* (which means "Virtue thrives without an opponent"). The bottom text names him Erasmus Balderman and says he was 33 years old when this was made. If you like this style, look up Renaissance next.
