Peasant Woman with Two Jugs is a 1524 ink by Barthel Beham, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a woman in a long, loose dress bending over two clay jugs. Her right hand rests on one jug while her left holds a woven basket. The ground around her is rough, with a few scattered plants. The lines are sharp and dark, making her clothes and the jugs look textured. The artist used tiny, repeating lines to build up shadows and details—this is called cross-hatching. It’s a way to make flat paper look three-dimensional. Look up cross-hatching to see how other artists used this technique.
Barthel Beham (1502–1540) was an artist, born in Nuremberg.
