The Feathered Turban (Le turban à aigrette) is a 1901 ink by Paul-Albert Besnard, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a woman lying down with her back to us. Her hair is piled up under a hat with feathers sticking out. The lines around her body and the background are rough and scratchy, like they were made by pressing hard into the paper. The artist used a technique that leaves deep, textured marks—this is how the feathers and skin look so detailed. The title calls out the hat, which is the only thing we can really see of her face. Next, look up etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how artists create these kinds of lines.
Paul-Albert Besnard (1849–1934) was a French artist, born in 7th arrondissement of Paris.
