This drawing shows a busy farm scene with people cutting hay, carrying bundles, and working in a field. A wagon sits in the middle, loaded with hay. In the background, a village and hills stretch under a bright sky. The lines are tight and detailed, with some areas filled in with gray wash. Notice how the artist uses lots of small, overlapping lines to create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. It makes the scene look three-dimensional even though it’s just ink on paper. If you like this, check out cross-hatching to see how other artists used it.
