Requiescat is a 1894 oil by Briton Rivière, a Post-Impressionism work, held at Art Gallery of New South Wales.
This painting depicts a knight in armor lying on a blue cloth-covered table, with a dog sitting beside him. The knight's face is obscured, and his body is covered in a blue cloth with gold embroidery. The dog, a brown hound, sits on the floor, looking up at the knight. The knight's armor is made of silver metal, and his body is covered in a blue cloth with gold embroidery. The dog's fur is a warm brown color, and its eyes are looking up at the knight. The background of the painting is dark, which highlights the knight and the dog. The painting is a somber and contemplative scene, with the knight and the dog as the main subjects. The use of chiaroscuro, a technique that uses strong contrasts between light and dark, adds depth and emotion to the painting. To learn more about this technique, look up chiaroscuro.
Requiescat is an oil on canvas painting by British artist Briton Rivière completed in 1888. The painting depicts an armoured medieval knight lying atop a bed with a blue floral sheet. A dog (often identified as a bloodhound) sits besides the bed while observantly looking towards the face of the knight on whom a wreath is placed, indicating death. The dog's expression is potentially explained by the title of the painting, Requiescat, meaning "a prayer for the repose of a dead person" as the dog keeps vigil over his late owner.
