Greed is a 1621 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a hunched figure with a hood pulled low, clutching a bag of coins. A deer’s antlers sit on its head, and a sleeping dog lies at its feet. Nearby, a barrel and a sack spill loose coins onto the ground. The word *Avaritia* (Latin for "greed") is written below, so this is an old warning about money’s dangers. The artist used sharp lines to make the figure look twisted and uneasy. Next, check out etching to see how artists like this carved images into metal plates.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
