Scapino and Cap. Zerbino is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two men in big, silly masks arguing on a street. One wears a long coat with a feathered hat, the other a puffy outfit with a long nose mask. Around them, smaller figures dance or watch, and a barrel sits in the middle of the scene. Buildings and trees line the background, but the focus is on the two masked men. The names under them—*Scapino* and *Capitan Zerbino*—are characters from a comedy. The artist used sharp lines to make the scene feel lively and full of movement. Next, check out the technique: etching to see how artists like Callot made these crisp lines.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
