The Landing of the Troops is a 1630 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows soldiers marching toward a beach with ships in the background. Above them, swirling clouds frame the whole image like a decorative border. The soldiers carry flags and weapons, and some are already wading into shallow water. The artist used fine lines to show movement and texture, like the waves and soldiers’ armor. The tiny details in the ships and landscape make it feel busy but precise. Next, check out how this was made using etching.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
