Overview

A watercolour by George Cattermole from 1867 depicts the burial site of Nell, the central character from Charles Dickens’s 1841 novel *The Old Curiosity Shop*, showing her final resting place in a small village after her death from exhaustion. The work, which once belonged to Dickens himself, was later acquired by his biographer John Forster and is now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
