This painting shows a group of men on horseback, dressed in bright, colorful clothes. The riders wear red hats and fur-lined robes, some holding reins or talking to each other. Behind them, a rocky cliff rises with a castle perched on top, and a green landscape stretches into the distance under a soft blue sky. The artist used loose, sketchy brushstrokes to capture the movement and light. Notice how the colors pop against the muted background—this was a common approach in the 1860s.
