About this work

This sketch shows a busy river packed with ships and barges, some tipped over like they’re sinking. A stone bridge with three big arches stretches across the water, connecting two sides of a city. Buildings line the riverbanks, and in the distance, church towers and smokestacks rise against a hazy sky. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show movement and chaos in the water. The ships look like they’re in a rush, maybe after a storm or just crowded with traffic. Look up *The Cleveland Museum of Art* to see more works like this.
