About this work

This etching shows a big ship being launched into a canal. Crowds of people stand on the shore and in small boats, watching the ship slide into the water. Smoke rises from fires near the ship, and buildings line the background, with a tall tower on the right. The title at the bottom reads *Het Afloopen Van een Schip*, which means "The Launching of a Ship." The scene looks busy but orderly, like a planned event.
