A boy in a doorway is hauling a giant sack of soot on his back. His cap is tilted low, his face is smudged, and his boots are caked in dirt. The alley behind him is narrow, with tall buildings and a cobblestone street. The sack is so heavy it drags on the ground, and his posture shows the strain. This painting was made to show hard work, not glamour. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more art like this.
