Free of Clouds is a 1920 ink by Arthur Bowen Davies, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows four loose, ink-washed figures in black and gray. Two standing women face each other—one with arms raised, the other with hands near her face. A man kneels in the center, holding a branch with a flower. Another woman sits to the right, resting on her elbow. The lines are quick and wobbly, like a sketch left unfinished. The artist used a mix of smudged ink and sharp lines to keep it feeling raw. The paper’s texture shows through in spots, adding to the sketchy look. Want to see more work like this?
