Castle with Lift-Bridge is a 1676 ink by Lucas van Doetechum, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white drawing shows a castle surrounded by tall trees. In front of the castle is a bridge that can be lifted, with water underneath. Two ducks float near the shore, and the trees have detailed leaves and branches. The artist used a mix of lines to show texture, like the rough walls of the castle and the smooth bridge. This kind of drawing was made by pressing ink into lines carved into metal. Next, check out the technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint.
Lucas van Doetechum (1501–1579) was an artist, born in Deventer.
