This is a black-and-white portrait of a bearded man with a serious expression. His face is framed by a decorative oval border filled with Latin text. The lines around his head look like they’re carved into the page, with shadows adding depth. The artist used tiny parallel lines to build up dark areas—this is called cross-hatching. It makes the face look almost three-dimensional. Next, check out how cross-hatching works in other prints.
